Stem Cell Therapy Q & A

What is stem cell therapy?

Stem cell therapy refers to a type of regenerative medicine that has revolutionized pain management, especially in addressing degenerative joint and bone conditions.

Each person has a certain amount of stem cells in their bodies. Stem cells develop in many parts of the body, such as cartilage, ligaments, tendons, muscles, and more. Also known as undifferentiated cells, stem cells don’t yet have a set function and can adapt to whatever function your body needs them to perform.

Stem cell therapy has been instrumental in helping physicians treat injuries and improve the healing process. Through stem cell therapy, your body receives the cells it needs to repair damaged tissue.

What conditions benefit from stem cell therapy?

Dr. Emmanuel primarily uses stem cell therapy to treat chronic pain.

If you’ve been diagnosed with osteoarthritis, for example, it means that the cartilage at the ends of your bones has started to wear away. When this happens, the bones rub together, causing pain and inflammation. Stem cell therapy can help restore cells and healthy tissue around the cartilage.

Stem cell therapy has also demonstrated results in treating the following injuries and conditions:

  • Rotator cuff tears
  • Muscle tears
  • Severe sprains
  • Meniscus tears
  • Tendonitis
  • Plantar fasciitis

During your consultation, Dr. Emmanuel discusses with you whether you’re a good candidate for stem cell therapy based on your medical profile and your treatment goals.

What happens during a stem cell therapy session?

Dr. Emmanuel has two options for procuring the stem cells: Either he harvests them from your bone marrow (adult stem cells) or uses cells from a donor (embryonic stem cells).

If Dr. Emmanuel determines that your medical condition requires new blood, bone, or heart muscle cells, he’ll collect the stem cells from your body. To do so, he’ll administer a topical anesthesia to ensure you’re comfortable during the stem cell extraction.

He then inserts a needle into a bone marrow-rich region and extracts the necessary amount of stem cells in that area. From there, he uses a centrifuge to mix the stem cells with a sample of your blood.

If your condition requires a more flexible and adaptive type of stem cell, he uses embryonic stem cells donated by clinics and mixes them in with your blood sample. Embryonic, or donor, stem cell treatment poses more risks because there is less known about how these cells will develop or react to your body.

Once Dr. Emmanuel has created the serum, he then injects it into the treatment area. To ensure proper results, he might use a diagnostic imaging tool to track the correct placement of the stem cells.

Depending on the effectiveness of the first injection, he might recommend follow-up injections.
