PRP Q & A

What is platelet-rich plasma?

Commonly known as PRP, platelet-rich plasma refers to a revolutionary, noninvasive regenerative therapy that involves gathering growth factor cells from your own blood.

Through a simple blood sample, Dr. Emmanuel extracts the cells from your blood and places them in a centrifuge to isolate a high concentration of the platelets.

Attached to platelets, growth factor cells are hyper-potent proteins that are instrumental in allowing your body to heal from injury and repair damaged tissue. Dr. Emmanuel injects the platelets into the treatment to stimulate regeneration.

What does platelet-rich plasma therapy treat?

Dr. Emmanuel uses PRP therapy to address a wide range of chronic conditions, injuries, and trauma. Some of these include:

  • Arthritis
  • Tendinitis
  • Ankle/knee pain
  • Muscle injuries
  • Shoulder/elbow injuries

In addition, if you’ve recently undergone surgery, such as for an orthopedic issue, Dr. Emmanuel may recommend PRP therapy to speed up your recovery process.

What are the side effects of PRP?

Most people who have PRP therapy experience little to no side effects after the procedure. This is because PRP uses cells from your own body. As a result, there’s minimal risk that your body will reject them.

Some people do have inflammation and pain around the injection site, but generally, the discomfort isn’t severe enough to disrupt daily activities.

When does platelet-rich plasma start working?

In most cases, you should start noticing results from your PRP treatment within 2-3 weeks.*

Since the treatment involves an injection, you might experience slight pain and inflammation immediately after the procedure. Nonetheless, this should fade within a few days.

Some patients start to feel better after just one PRP treatment session. After your treatment, Dr. Emmanuel tracks your progress to make sure the PRP is reacting well with your body. If the first session hasn’t shown effective results, you can schedule follow-up treatment sessions 4-8 weeks after the first one.

Repeat treatments are entirely safe, as the treatment itself doesn’t involve the injection of an artificial substance into your body.
