Erectile Dysfunction Q & A

What is erectile dysfunction?

Erectile dysfunction is when men have trouble both getting and maintaining an erection.

While this can happen to anyone, you’ll know you have erectile dysfunction if it happens often enough for it to impact your sex life.

Erectile dysfunction is entirely normal and treatable.

What causes erectile dysfunction?

There can be a range of factors that contribute to erectile dysfunction. Typically, it involves a combination of health problems and psychological issues. For example, if you’re able to get and maintain an erection on your own but not with your partner, your erectile dysfunction might be related to anxiety.

On the other hand, if you’re unable to get an erection regardless of the situation, your erectile dysfunction might be related to a health condition impacting blood flow to your penis.

Any of the following can also cause erectile dysfunction:

  • Diabetes
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Obesity
  • Hypertension
  • Heart disease
  • High cholesterol
  • Low testosterone
  • Prostate cancer

Certain medications can also cause erectile dysfunction. Dr. Emmanuel can help you determine the exact cause of your erectile dysfunction and recommend the appropriate treatment.

How do you treat erectile dysfunction?

Before recommending treatment, Dr. Emmanuel discusses your symptoms with you in detail. If your erectile dysfunction is related to an underlying medical condition, he’ll recommend treatment to take care of that first. If your erectile dysfunction remains, he’ll then focus on the dysfunction itself for treatment.

Some of the most common treatments for erectile dysfunction include:

Viagra® (sildenafil)

Viagra refers to a prescription medication that you take before intercourse to help you get an erection at the right time. With effects lasting up to five hours after ingestion, Viagra ensures that you can see intercourse through to the end.

Injectable treatments

If Viagra isn’t right for you, Dr. Emmanuel might recommend an injectable drug like alprostadil. Dr. Emmanuel and his team will show you how to safely inject the medication to do it at home. When you’re ready for sex, inject the medication. Blood flow to your penis will increase, and you’ll get an erection within 10 to 30 minutes.

Penile implants

If medication hasn’t worked for you, Dr. Emmanuel might recommend a more permanent solution, such as a penile implant. This prosthetic device is inserted during an outpatient procedure. Once installed, you’ll need to press on the implant to get an erection.

The Priapus Shot (P-Shot) uses pain-free injections of your own platelet-rich plasma to stimulate new tissue growth, resulting in firmer and larger erections.

Extracorporeal shockwave therapy

Extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT) is a noninvasive and nonsurgical treatment that uses shock waves to restore natural erectile function. It works by helping to create new blood vessels in the region, increasing blood flow to the penis.

Dr. Emmanuel and his team use a machine specifically calibrated to address erectile dysfunction that medication or injections won’t correct. Extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT) can also be used for women.

Stem cell therapy

With this treatment, Dr. Emmanuel injects stem cells into the erectile tissue of your penis to stimulate erections and restore their regularity. Men have reported results within six months.
